Phillies-Mets Rivalry Second Best
By Derek | Filed Under Article | 2 Comments
In a post to Dugout Central, Jeff Moore puts together some funky math to let us all know that the Phillies-Mets is the second-best rivalry in baseball, behind Yankees-Red Sox.
This NL East battle doesn’t have quite the history lesson behind it as the Cubs and Cards, but the recent battles have been great, and the Mets’ collapse last year was downright historic. The dislike between the teams has been well documented, but has only played out in the media thus far. One misplaced fastball could easily change that. The Phillies are currently in first place and the Mets should be closer than they are. Both have been in the playoffs recently, and no one in either clubhouse is too fond of Mets closer Billy Wagner. Add it up, and you get a powder keg ready to explode.
The Mets come down to CBP for a four-game series against the Phils starting tomorrow.
F the Mets and any Mets fans who make their way to south Philly this weekend. Idea: Ram a quarter-stick of dynamite up your collective asses and celebrate the fourth in Queens where you belong.

Kearse: Eagles Fans Will Miss Me
By Derek | Filed Under Announcement, News | 1 Comment
Former Eagle and current drunk driver/Tennessee Titan Jevon Kearse, who was released by the Eagles in February, said his former team will be sorry it didn’t re-sign him.
Kearse, who was arrested and charged with DUI near Vanderbilt University on June 22, told ESPN’S Paul Kuharsky that the Eagles and their fans will be surprised at how well he plays this season.
“They’ll say, ‘Why the hell did we let that dude go?’ ” Kearse said. ” ‘What were they thinking?’ But everything happens for a reason. Maybe it was a good reason: So I can get pissed off and get more motivated.”
Get more motivated? You have got to be kidding me. I, for some crazy reason, though pride and millions of dollars got players like this lunk-headed clown motivated.

Breaking: Myers Sent Down
By Derek | Filed Under News | 5 Comments
The Phillies optioned right-hander Brett Myers to Triple-A Lehigh Valley before tonight’s game against the Atlanta. General manager Pat Gillick announced the move in a statement.
“I can’t say enough about Brett’s willingness to accept this assignment,” Gillick said. “He understood and is eager to get back on track again. He’s struggling right now, but he is a quality Major League pitcher who we are going to need in the second half of the season.”
While this is something that was totally necessary here - this is not going to score this team any well-needed runs. Who else needs to be sent down?

Eagles Sign 3rd Rounder Bryan Smith
By Derek | Filed Under News | Leave a Comment
The Associated Press is reporting that the Eagles signed third-round draft pick Bryan Smith today. Smith, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound defensive end from Division I-AA McNeese State, recorded 31 sacks and 187 tackles in 31 games.
The Eagles have yet to sign second-round selections Trevor Laws and DeSean Jackson - and anyone that can be their #1 wide receiver.

Let’s help solve the mystery - or at least have a look at what may be the yuppiest couple on the face of this green earth.
I photographed this couple last August in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. It looked to me like they were getting engaged. they got away before I could catch them and let them know I got the shots and would be happy to let them have them. So, Philadelphians and South Jerseyites do you know these folks? Have them contact davdog!
If you’re in Philadelphia, copy this photo and email this to your fellow Philadelphians and pass it on. Lets solve this mystery!

Tired Of The Off Days - And The Excuses
By Derek | Filed Under Article | Leave a Comment
I have not had, in all of my 37 years, a team tell the press that it’s “Good that we have an off day coming up” as much as this year’s Phillies team.
This team has to get its collective head on straight.
Utley said he thinks the day off today will help the Phils, but maybe the familiarity of the National League will help them the most.
“It’s always nice to face guys that you’ve seen before,” Utley said. “But the last few weeks are in the past. We’ve got to focus on the future right now.”
Yeah, this team is still in first place. However, think where this team would be if they could have just managed mediocre baseball against AL teams that outplayed dominated them - cruising into the All Star Break.
Nope. Not gonna happen with this team. Just like with the so many slow starts, the Phillies have no sense of urgency. Now you’ve got a team with no fear of being overcome in the standings when they are losing two of three every time out, because no team is capable of taking first place away from them?
The want does not seem to be there. Perhaps the Phillies are looking to get to the break and then hunker down for a playoff run.
Are they banking on a terrific second half simply because they’ve done it the last few seasons? I really hope not because finishing second to the Mets would be disastrous.

Myers Set For Bullpen?
By Derek | Filed Under Article | Leave a Comment
Brett Myers could soon be out of the Phillies’ starting rotation and back in the bullpen.
The Associated Press is reporting that Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee talked to Myers before the game Saturday night in Texas, a night after Myers gave up five runs and was pulled without recording an out in the third inning of an 8-7 loss to the Rangers.
Since winning consecutive decisions in mid-April, Myers (3-9, 5.84 ERA in 17 starts) is 1-8 in his last 13 starts. The NL East-leading Phillies have won only two of those games.
There is no doubt that the Phillies need production out of this starter’s spot and clearly are not getting it from Myers. A trade may be the best option for this guy as we all know he can close and love the pressure of closing.
Closing here is not an option for Myers as we have arguably the best in the business in Brad Lidge (thanks Ed Wade) owning the back of our bullpen.
UPDATE
Phillies general manager Pat Gillick said on the team’s pregame radio show Saturday that they would make an “adjustment” to the rotation this week. Phils pitching coach Rich Dubee also said Saturday that skipping Myers is a definite possibility.
