Bernard Hopkins Lays Into Donovan McNabb

Philadelphia’s own boxing living legend, Bernard Hopkins, let his feelings for Donovan McNabb be known to Howard Eskin on WIP yesterday…

“I think he plays for the moment, whether it’s winning or losing,” Hopkins said. “I think he plays to win, but I don’t think his demeanor and I don’t think his personality fits to win tomorrow, to win the next week and to win with any means necessary. There’s a difference than wanting to win and showing that you want to win. I think that most athletes go in the ring or in the court, basketball or football, go in there with the intentions of winning until something is different that they feel that they don’t want to deal with, understand or just be in the mix. Some people just want to be in the mix, Howard. And if they get lucky and be like ‘Oh I can win this’ then they’ll go ahead and they’ll show their swagger. But at the end of the day, you got frontrunners and you got runners, and he’s one of the greatest frontrunners I’ve ever seen in the NFL.”

Hopkins predicted the Eagles will finish 7-9 this season, winning seven games despite of McNabb – “He don’t have the heart,” he said. “He don’t want to fail so he don’t want to try.”

You tell me, what, if anything, that Hopkins said above is not true?

First off, Hopkins is a great boxer. But when it comes to football…Hopkins is a great boxer.

What access does Hopkins have to McNabb or the Eagles??? The only way that guy gets in the Linc is the same way everyone else does. By buying a ticket.

McNabb has come up small in big spots. There’s no doubt about that. But is it because McNabb doesn’t want to win…or because he has played most of those big games with mostly shit at the WR position??? How would Hopkins know one way or the other???

People already forget that McNabb put the Eagles ahead in the 4th quarter of the NFCC game after being WAY DOWN…and then the defense gave up a 8+ minute, back-breaking TD drive.

Other players besides the QB sometimes have to step up and make plays in order to win big games. David Tyree caught a pass using 1 hand and his helmet in the SB, with Rodney Harrison draped all over him. When was the last time an Eagles receiver did that???

And before anyone accuse me of being an apologist for McNabb, turn on WIP. Just about every host is in agreement that Hopkins is way over the line. There’s even a rumor floating that Hopkins’ beef with McNabb is personal because McNabb didn’t have any time for Hopkins at some sports function.

Nice rip off of Gargano…LOL. I heard him say that today because 950 ESPN was on a commercial break. 610 stinks By the way.

I didn’t hear Gargano say that…but he’s not the first one to ever use that expression. It’s a fairly old insult.

But then again…you would know when it comes to rip-offs.

I think you can agree that Hopkins knows heart. The is a guy that simply refuses to lose even (especially) when he is not given a chance by the media or his peers.

So if Hopkins says that McNabb has no desire to win and that he is a “frontrunner” I have to listen. We should all listen.

Hopkins also knows what life in the joint is like. Just because he “knows heart” doesn’t make him an authority on McNabb, the Eagles, or football in general. He watches the same games on TV that everyone else does. All he is doing is running his mouth.

Maybe if Hopkins didn’t trash talk his way through his own career, he would have seen some of the mega-paydays that some of his peers (De La Hoya, Roy Jones, Jr, et al) enjoyed, and he wouldn’t be so concerned with another athlete in a different sport. The guy is clearly going out of his way to take shots at McNabb. Anyone who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.
