Brett Myers – It’s Time To Shine

With the 3-year, $37.5 million contract extension Brad Lidge signed yesterday, Bret Myers was given the not-so-subtle hint that his remaining tenure with the Phillies would take place every five days.

A role Myers should and will flourish in.

“People have drawn their conclusions, one way or the other, that he absolutely doesn’t want to start, that he’d prefer to close, and that might be the case,” said Pat Gillick, the Phillies’ general manager. “But I don’t see any reason, with his ability and what he’d done previously as a player, that he can’t start…

“Let me put it this way: There’s a lot of things in life that a lot of people don’t want to do,” Gillick said. “There are probably things that you guys don’t want to do. But you’re getting paid and you’ve got to show up for work and you’ve got to do the best job you can. Consequently, he’s a gamer and I think when he goes out there, he’ll give 100 percent no matter if he’s in a closer situation in the bullpen or a starter. I don’t see any reason why he can’t start.”

There is no reason Myers can’t start. He knows this as well as anybody and the moment he accepts that, the closer this team will be to where it wants to be.

All this kid has to do is get past the fact that it was easier to close for him. Now the job gets tougher and he needs to get straight and become a rock in that starting rotation – not a self-proclaimed “rockstar” in the bullpen.

The time is now Brett – you’ll never be on a better team – one that Brad Lidge is now a very large part of.

Do really want this guy on your team? He’s been mediocre at best his whole career in the rotation, and wasn’t exactly lights out as a closer last season. What can the Phillies do with this guy? I’m not sure you can trade him with his contract and diminished velocity(which some believe is caused by throwing to many splitters the last few years ala Mike Scott). Do you make him a $12m set-up man? DFA?

In some cases you are right – why bend over backwards for this guy who is incapable of getting his head straight?

But there is reason to think he can be a lights out guy – and if he really wants to close and someone is willing to give up a starter for him and change, it is something to explore for sure.
