Brett Myers Signs With Astros
Hell, if you can’t hack it in Philly, there’s always Ed Wade’s open arms – and wallet – in Houston. Brett Myers and the Houston Astros finalized a one-year contract today that guarantees him $5 million.
The 29-year-old right-hander and sometime loose cannon had spent all eight of his major league seasons with the Phillies, compiling a 73-63 record with a with a 4.40 ERA.
Myers, who made $12 million last season, was 4-3 with a 4.84 ERA in 10 starts and eight relief appearances.
The deal includes a mutual option for 2011 and may prove to be an absolute steal if Myers gets his head on straight and commits to pitching in the Big Leagues.
As general manager of the Phillies, Wade drafted Myers in the first round of the 1999 First-Year Player Draft. Myers went 14-9 as a starter in his first full season in the Majors in 2003 and went 11-11 in ‘04. In 2005 he won 13 games with a career-best 3.72 ERA. In 2006, he led the Phillies in wins, ERA, starts, innings pitched, strikeouts and winning percentage.

One Comment so far ...
$5MM for Myers, and $4.5MM for Feliz. That’s a lot of money for an easy out and a power pitcher who lost his fastball.
$9.5MM would fetch a decent player on the open market. I guess that’s why Wade is no longer here.
