This afternoon, the Eagles signed former New England Patriots tight end Alex Smith.

Smith (6-foot-4, 258 pounds) will be a backup and see spot play behind starter Brent Celek, a third-year pro entering his first full season as the starter. He spent four seasons with Tampa Bay before being dealt to the Patriots in the off-season.

For his career, Smith has played in 58 games and has 129 receptions for 1,252 yards and 11 touchdowns. His best season came in 2007, when he caught 32 passes for 385 yards and three touchdowns.

To make room for Smith, the Eagles released tight end Tony Curtis.
