Hamels And Myers Separated In Clubhouse

Word is that Brett Myers and Cole Hamels had little bit of a confrontation in the team’s clubhouse following the Phillies loss in Game 5 of the World Series.

Seems that Myers was not happy with the comments Hamels made regarding wanting the season to be over. “What are you doing here? I thought you quit,” Myers said to Hamels.

Hamels was not too pleased with what Myers had to say and the two were separated by team officials before it could get out of hand. He is also not happy with the perception that he wants the season to end with anything other than a World Series Championship.

Update: Brett Myers has denied this confrontation having taken place.

“Sometimes I might not say the best things or the smartest things, but I’ve learned and am learning,” Hamels told ESPN. “I wasn’t able to sleep the past couple of nights because of it.”

When the Yankees beat him up in Game 3, an unhappy Hamels said of the season, “I can’t wait for it to end. It’s been mentally draining. At year end, you just can’t wait for a fresh start.”

However, in the same interview, he said he hoped to pitch Game 7 if the series goes that far.

“I went to Charlie just to talk to him because that’s who I am, and I think he understands that,” Hamels said. “I just wanted to tell him my true thoughts – that I’ll never ever quit. I want to play this game until somebody takes it away from me.

Which is so nice to hear – and if it took Myers’ big mouth to get that out of him – all the better.

Hamels is in the mother of all slumps…but Brett Myers shouldn’t be the one doing the talking.

The Phils owe a big part of the credit for last year’s title run to Hamels, and whatever happens to him in the future, that can’t be taken away.

Hamels could have zinged Myers with:- Did your wife quit when you popped her in the mouth???- You still play here???- Good luck pitching in Kansas City next year.

I advocated Myers for the closing role. But he wasn’t ready, and he is not playing a major role in the post-season. Therefore, he’s not the one who should be popping off, especially after a big win. Myers is more than welcome to take his $12MM arm and 10-cent head elsewhere next year. His salary is much better spent going towards Cliff Lee’s contract extension.
