Matt Holiday Coming To Town?
By Derek
Very nice win for Jamie Moyer and the Phillies last night. However, it looks like Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal is stealing the headlines in Philly today with this gem:
The Phillies were working multiple fronts before acquiring right-hander Joe Blanton from the A’s. Among the possibilities that reached a standstill: A blockbuster for Rockies left fielder Matt Holliday and closer Brian Fuentes.
For Holliday and Fuentes, the Phillies probably would need to part with a package of Shane Victorino, left-hander J.A. Happ, Class AA right-hander Carlos Carrasco and Class AA catcher Lou Marson. Another of their better prospects, Class AA lefty Antonio Bastardo, has a slight tear in his labrum.
Holliday would play right field, with Jayson Werth taking over full-time in center, then return to left next season if Pat Burrell departed as a free agent. After that, Holliday, too, would become a free agent.
The Phillies would prefer not to move Marson, who looms as the eventual replacement for the disappointing Carlos Ruiz. Payroll also would be an issue; Holliday and Fuentes are owed almost $6 million combined for the rest of the season, Victorino only about $190,000. The addition of Blanton already has added about $1.5 million.
Check out this potential gameday lineup:
1. Rollins SS
2. Utley 2b
3. Holliday RF
4. Howard 1B
5. Burrell LF
6. Werth CF
7. Feliz 3B
8. Ruiz C
9. P
Woot!

To be honest, i wouldnt like this move, Heap seems like a good pitcher, i’d move any hitting propect but i mean we have 3 pitching positions 2 fill,
we have Cole and Kyle for next year, and at the end of the year i feel bad since the A’s guy left.
So, going into the off season we have 1.Cole 2. possible Kendrick, 3. Possible Kendrick, 4. Heap. 5. A’s guy or a great prospect.
Thts they way i see it, Moyer is probably going to be gone, Myers gone or Bullpen Eaton gone we hope.
So while Holiday would be great here i’d try to trade Jenkins, Victorino, Myers and a class A guy for Holiday they maybe sign an outfielder.
Just i wouldnt give up any high-class prospects
You are a dope. The ‘A’s’ guy, Joe Blanton is Phillies property until the end of the 2010 season. Happ is nothing more than a #5 starter at best. Why would the Rockies take on Jenkins or Myers contract when they’re obviously trying to dump salary? Matt Holliday is one of the best pure hitters in baseball, the Phillies should do whatever it takes to make this trade.
While i would love to have Holliday, and Brian Fuentes, its asking a lot. By adding Holliday and losing Victorino, you’d end up losin a lot of speed and defense in center field, there would only be Rollins to steal bases assuming they still platoon jenkins and Werth since Jenkins is way too expensive to not play
Also, the holes that the phils have now, catcher and an outfielder/burrell’s replacement would be even bigger holes in two years, burrell would be gone after this year, and holliday the year after that, and who would be there to replace them?? they couldn’t afford to sign holliday and sign howard, and i don’t think they’re gonna sign burrell either which way
also, the phils need to bring up at least one pitcher in the starting rotation in the next year or two because even tho the phils are spendin more and have more money now, they don’t have so much where they can jus have 4 or 5 straight guys makin more than 7 mill a year, since cole hamels will be makin a lot more in arbitration (i’m guessin nex year), the phils need another cheap, but good guy, i.e.- carrasco or happ
on JA Happ, he went up against the mets when santana was pitchin, which meant the pressure was on, and he kept them to jus 2 runs, and when he got sent back down, he went hitless for all 7 innings he was in and struck out 12, i think its a little too early to be callin this guy a #5 pitcher
Brian Fuentes would be great, but i think i heard on espn that he’s a free agent after this year, and he’s not gonna resign with the phillies cuz he wants to be a closer, and i don’t think it be worth tradin anybody really good in the minors for him, especially since the phils already have the best pen in the NL
Epicable, i always respect your thoughts but i dont think the Phils have the pen in the NL, i mean we got great guys then bad guys. I mean we got Lidge, Remero, Durbin, Madson’s been good lately, and Gordon can be good. Then Hopefully Myers will go to the Pen and we keep up Heap. Thent the back bullpen guys i cant even think off the top of my head.
And Lets Go Mets, yeah well i my be a dope right now, but i think Heap will b a good pitcher. Now 7 inning and 2 runs on the Mets is good, hell, its good anywhere, but like epicable said its too early to call J.A. a 5h starter, the kids got a bright future.
Now again i do agree with Epicable, we shouldnt be paying prospects and good playing in the minors for a rent-a-player. Hes not goin to be here.
Now if we were goin 2 be loosin Victorino for Holiday it be a bitter-sweet thing, the bitter part: we loose defence, speed, Stolen Bases. The sweet part: Holiday is a allstar for one. He can get a good hitter, we get a good 35 HRs a year, bout 15 SBs, and a good average hitter, last year he batted 340 with 36 homers, the year before 326 with 34 homers.
Meanwhile Shane has stolen 41 bases in 2 years (37 last year and 4 the eyar before) hit 12 hrs last year. and 46 RBIs?!
and 12 of those were HRs so besides himself he batted in 34 other batters.
While the outfield switch would be awesome. I dont think i wanna give up prospects for a rent-a-player.
Listen you two, do you want to win a championship or would you rather watch the soon to blossom careers of J.A. Happ and Shane Victorino? With players like Cole Hamels, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins in their primes, the Phillies have a small window to seriously contend while this guys are under contract and producing at this level. Adding Matt Holliday for the stretch drive this year and as a replacement for Burrell next , not only gives the Phillies great odds on a championship in 08 but 09 as well. Anytime you can trade two marginal guys for a player that will avg. .330 35 120, you do it.
alright, after the game i just watched today, fckn trade for holliday, the offense is completely shot, go for it, i’ve had enough of this crap, 2 runs in 11 innings??? jesus..
as for the bullpen, i gotta disagree with u IQ, when you can name 4 or 5 guys in the bullpen who are good, that means you have a good bullpen
as for the window, i don’t think the window’s small, milwaukee’s got a small window (this year only), the phils got these core guys for like 4 more years together at least, and when you trade golson, carrasco, and lou marson, that means your window actually shrinks to two years, if you keep those guys and they end up bein good, then you can actually extend your window a couple more years
its a tradeoff, but our offense is shot, i wanna punch them all in the face, and jesus, the mets jus won in the 11th…
and gillick should not be in charge of signing any free agents that are more than a million dollars, geoff jenkins is terrible, how could he sign him for so much and for two years ($6.5 mill)?? especially since he’s jus a platoon player, you can get platoon players for like 3 mill, and now we’re stuck with him for next year too
i would trade for holliday, but not fuentes, first, i would see if i could trade eaton and eat half of his contract, and then i would see if they would take happ, marson, and some other minor leaguers for holliday, but keep carrasco and golson, and hope they take that
I think the phillies need a rowand type bat in the order. they need a consistent right handed hitter that hits for average. Power is a plus. Holliday satisfies a serious need for the phillies. I don’t think the phillies should part with marson or carrasco. If they can swing a deal without giving up those two prospects, I think they need to pull the trigger. Moyer won’t last forever and Carrasco will probably fill his slot in the next two years unless moyer’s social security check isn’t enough lol. I haven’t seen Marson play defense. If he can’t play defense, then get rid of him.
The phillies need Holliday’s bat. The phillies have lost too many games with too many runners stranded in scoring position because of inconsistent bats. The numbers may look good for some of the big bats in phillies order but time and again in clutch situations— those production figures don’t translate into enough wins.
