Brett Myers could soon be out of the Phillies’ starting rotation and back in the bullpen.

The Associated Press is reporting that Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee talked to Myers before the game Saturday night in Texas, a night after Myers gave up five runs and was pulled without recording an out in the third inning of an 8-7 loss to the Rangers.

Since winning consecutive decisions in mid-April, Myers (3-9, 5.84 ERA in 17 starts) is 1-8 in his last 13 starts. The NL East-leading Phillies have won only two of those games.

There is no doubt that the Phillies need production out of this starter’s spot and clearly are not getting it from Myers. A trade may be the best option for this guy as we all know he can close and love the pressure of closing.

Closing here is not an option for Myers as we have arguably the best in the business in Brad Lidge (thanks Ed Wade) owning the back of our bullpen.

UPDATE

Phillies general manager Pat Gillick said on the team’s pregame radio show Saturday that they would make an “adjustment” to the rotation this week. Phils pitching coach Rich Dubee also said Saturday that skipping Myers is a definite possibility.
