Phillies Acquire Scott Eyre
Published: August 7th, 2008
The Phillies have acquired left-handed reliever Scott Eyre from the Cubs for Minor League right-hander Brian Schlitter.
The 36-year-old Eyre appeared in just 19 games for Chicago this season.
Eyre is a 12-year veteran with a 23-29 record and a 4.42 ERA in 556 games with the White Sox, Blue Jays, Giants and Cubs. He’s in the final year of his contract.
I am unsure why they picked up a relief pitcher with the offense breaking Phillies fan’s hearts. The Phils were blanked by the Marlins today, 3-0.

Dman, sometimes I think you know nothing of baseball. Why did they pick up a proven lefty reliever, for basically nothing? Something they’ve been lacking. Someone who can give Romero a break. Why wouldn’t they? You should be praising this pick up. It makes an already strong bullpen even stronger. Why would you even question this pick? Just like a typical Phillies’ fan, shit on the smart moves and praise the bad ones.

ooooh, that was harsh..
the phillies seem to have a trading theme here, which is trade for a guy who has a lot of ability but jus needs a change of scenary, if he actually does start pitching good again, then i like it, and if he isn’t that great, i still like it cuz the phils do need another lefthander and les walrond, altho he has a lot of skills, may not be there mentally yet, or maybe he jus needed to get those first day jitters out of the way, and JA Happ is a starter, so get him out of the bullpen, and Tom Gordon and Rudy Seanez are both out, and even tho they both might suck, you need somebody to replace them, and you can always use bullpen help
the red sox are makin a move for RF Giles, if this guy was available, i would have liked for the phils to have gotten him if the price wasn’t too high, wtf
THE RUIZ AND BRUNTLETT BLACKHOLE - this has been bothering me a lot since Feliz has been out, whenever charlie plays the both of them, its a huge blackhole, if you’re lucky, they might hit 1 for 8 combined, those two combined with the pitcher means you got a 7, 8, 9 hole, and today, they had jenkins who also sux which expands the hole, which means 6, 7, 8, and 9 were a waste of time, its bad when the pitcher has the highest batting average, you can’t play ruiz and bruntlett at the same time, break it up, i understand bruntlett has to play with kendrick and moyer cuz of his D (which isn’t so great at 3rd and doesn’t have a strong enough arm), so then use coste more, use him back to back, do somethin, cuz that blackhole cannot exist anymore, it must be stopped

its not a coincidence that today they got shutout, yesterday they scored 5 runs (coste and Dobbs played) and when they only scored 2 runs the day before that, guess who started at 3rd and catcher

His salary is too high for the Phils. I’m suprised the Mets didn’t try to grab him first. He came into the game this afternoon after the waiver claim was announced. This leads me to believe they aren’t close. I like Giles. His OBP is always near .400, he has power, hard-nosed. Ideal #2 or #3 hitter.

Eric, I doubt that if my lack of baseball knowledge forced me into writing the above as much as my frustration with the Phillies’ offense.
I am sure I speak for all users of this site that a letsgomets baseball column would be a welcome one. Care to share all that knowledge with the rest of us?
