Quotable: Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard

After the Phillies’ glorious three game HOME sweep of the Mets, we finally get a quote from Shane Victorino that is worthwhile. Yes, there is nothing like kicking the junk out of a lifeless Mets team to complete a wonderful holiday weekend…

“Yeah, they’ve got a lot of guys injured, but you know what?” centerfielder Shane Victorino asked after the Phillies swept the Mets yesterday with a 2-0 win. “If we were hurt, they’re not going to worry about it.

“You try to stomp them. You try to win. I’m not going to make excuses for them, ‘Oh, their guys aren’t there.’ Yeah, we know it’s not the team that they can be, but we still have to go out and win, and we took three games like we should have.”

Said Ryan Howard: “We know their team is not at full strength. We’ve been in that situation before and had to go out and play. That’s one of the things that happens in this game, and for them, they have to continue to play.

“We wanted to try and take this because we know that team over there isn’t at full strength,” Howard said. “It’s July, but we want to take as many games as possible. We didn’t give extra outs. We didn’t make a lot of mistakes. When you look back, it was everything you can hope and dream for a baseball game.”

If the Phils have to empty out the farm to land Halliday…so be it. They have a 3-year window to win. It will not be a problem to extend Halliday, because Eaton, Myers and Jenkins’ salaries come off the books at the end of the season, which total $22 to $25MM.

If this was a young team looking to contend down the road, then you don’t make a deal like this. But with the core of this team in it’s prime, and already having a WS under their belts…you have to do this deal.

Happ, Marson, Donald, Savery, Taylor, Mayberry…Find a way to hang on to Drabek, and the Jays probably don’t want a struggling Carrasco. If Drabek has to be in the deal, then I would pull back Marson and Savery.

    Get this deal done, Amaro.
